Accelerated Resolution Therapy

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an intensive, evidence-based psychotherapy that uses structured techniques to treat psychological trauma and a wide range of mental health concerns. Developed by Laney Rosenzweig in 2008, ART is known for its efficiency—many clients experience meaningful change in significantly fewer sessions compared to traditional talk therapy.

ART is unique in its approach. The therapist guides the client in replacing distressing images associated with traumatic memories with positive, self-chosen images. This process allows the emotional and physical symptoms of trauma—such as fear, anxiety, or physiological activation—to resolve while the factual memory remains intact.

A key component of ART is its use of rapid eye movements, which facilitate voluntary, adaptive changes in how the brain stores and processes distressing experiences. ART integrates elements from well-established therapeutic models such as Gestalt therapy, psychodynamic approaches, and guided imagery. While ART has its own structured protocol, it shares foundational principles with other trauma-focused therapies like EMDR, including memory reconsolidation and bilateral stimulation. These components, combined with ART’s enhancements, help produce faster and more effective results.

ART can be beneficial whether someone has experienced a single distressing event or multiple traumatic experiences across the lifespan. It is especially helpful for individuals who have been in traditional therapy for months, years, or even decades, as well as those who feel “stuck” despite previous therapeutic work. Some clients choose to engage exclusively in ART, while others continue their ongoing psychotherapy with another provider and use ART as a complementary intervention.

Many clients notice significant improvement within 1–5 sessions, though more sessions may be recommended for complex trauma or when addressing multiple events. Because ART often produces rapid results, many clients prefer it as a cost-effective alternative or supplement to weekly psychotherapy. For many, meaningful change begins as early as the first appointment.
All ART Intensive Sessions require a 90 minute Intake.

The Process of ART Session

Each session begins with recalling the distressing memory and focusing on the most distressing imagery associated with that event. It is not to retraumatize the person, but to assist with uncovering the effects of the event on the body.

How are 1/2 and Full Day Intensives different from regular sessions?

ART Intensives are structured to assist with healing faster in a therapeutic setting. This type of program is utilized instead of scheduling multiple sessions over several weeks or months. It is a more concentrated way of ART in a short time frame and getting all the benefits of ART within 1 or several days. A 90 minute intake session is required prior to start of intensive sessions. ART Intensives are like getting a year a therapy in 1  or several days. It is also more cost effective, less time commitment to weekly therapy appointments and promotes healing, faster.
